Barodabri is a small village adjacent to Hasimara Air Force base and Chilapata Forests in the Dooars area of West Bengal.
The village has come to prominence primarily due to the forest department tourist accommodation in the village. River Torsa flows through the back of the village. Tourists visiting Barodabri are primarily attracted by the Chilapata forest which is adjacent to the village. Jaldapara is also just 10 kilometres away. Tourists visiting Bhutan by road also often stay overnight at Barodabri as the Bhutan Boarder town of Phuentsholing is about 20 kms away.
Tourists coming by train may take any train travelling towards North East and alight at Alipurduar Junction. From here Barodabri is a little over an hour’s drive. You can also come to New Jalpaiguri and travel to Barodabari which is about 3.5 hours drive away. The nearest railstation is Hasimara about 8 kms away, only local trains stop at this station. Bagdogra is the nearest airport about 150 kms away.
Barodabri is located on the main National Highway 31C which passes through Dooars. On the National Highway it is just a couple of kms after the Hasimara Airfore main gate.
Early morning visit inside the forests of Chilapata is a major attraction. A number of wildlife including Deer, Gaur (Indian Bison) and Elephants are commonly sighted. The morning drive takes tourists to the Kodalbasti village and CC line which is ideal for sighting wildlife. The same tour also takes tourists to the Torsa riverbed.
In the afternoon you can go for a walk around the village, there is a small stream running behind the village which is a good spot to spend the afternoon. There are couple of elephants maintained by the forest department that are kept in the vicinity.
At the Hasimara crossing the Venkateswara Balaji Temple is also worth a visit for the religious minded. There is a large statue of Lord Hanuman declaring the ubiquitous presence of monkeys in the area.
Chilapata forests are in immediate vicinity of Barodabri. You can even walk in the forest fringe from your accommodation here. You can also take a jeep safari inside the forests.
Jaldapara is also not far. The main entrance to Jaldapara forests at Madarihat is about 14 kms from here. You can easily visit Jaldapara for sightseeing and return here for overnight stay.
The Buxa forests are also just an hours drive away. Entrance to Buxa forests is Rajabhatkhawa which is 30 kms from here.
Phuentsholing, the main entry point to Bhutan by road is just 22 kms. Even those travelling to Bhutan may find Barodabari a good location to spend a night.
