Charar-i-Sharief

The town of Charar-i-sharief was destined to be the resting place of the famous Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani who preached Islam through poetry. He was born in 1377 as Nund Rishi of Sahanazabad and showed signs of being a distinguished spiritual saint from a very early age. Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani preached communal harmony, non-violence, vegetarianism and tolerance to the people. It was in Charar-i-sharief that Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani used to say his Friday prayers. After his death in 1438, his coffin was believed to have flied to a sacred site in Charar-i-Sharief and it was here that the Sufi saint was laid to rest. A tomb named ‘Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani ’ was consecrated on this very holy site the memory of the saint.  The wooden tomb is believed to be 600 years old. It is one of the most revered Muslim shrines of India. Every year Urs (death anniversary) is conducted in the tomb.
Charar-i-sharief is 35 kilometers drive from Srinagar. It is located at an altitude of 1,933 meters.

Getting There

Nearest airport to is at Srinagar about 29 kilometers drive from here.
A roadway connects Charar-i-sharief directly to Srinagar. The 29 kms journey takes less than an hour to cover.

Yousmarg is a hill station about 16 kilometers south-east of Charar-i-sharief in Badgam district of Jammu & Kashmir. It is 47 kilometers drive from Srinagar. This place is situated right in the middle of a forest block in Badgam district. Yousmarg has a completely different landscape dominated by grassy meadows accompanied by Pine and Fir forests. This hill station is 2,396 meters above the sea level jutted into a hilly track which could be designated as a younger pair of Pir Panjal.River Doodganga, a tributary of Jhelum River, forms the bank of Yousmarg. Consequently, Yousmarg has everything from lakes and river to mountains and meadows. The mountainous topography added an advantage to the place and it is now recognized as an important trekking ground. Horse riding, skiing and fishing could be other options for adventure lovers.

Some beautiful places to see around Yousmarg are Nilang Lake, Tosa Maidan, Sang-e-Safed, Mount Tatakooti and Sunset Peak. Nilang Lake is a popular picnic spot.
