Mech community comes under the broader Boro group of Eastern
India. According to the anthropologists the Meches and the Coches
belong to the same stock. They are now accepted within the Rajbansi
caste and there is free inter marriage between Rajbansis, Coches
and Meches.
Shifting cultivation and hunting was their
original occupation. Now they are adept in spinning, weaving,
fishing etc. They have settled in forest areas in Alipurduar
region.
