Cloud and the hills

Guarded by majestic mountains, beautiful waterfalls, luscious lakes, The Garo Hills comes under the Garo-Khasi range in the north eastern state of Meghalaya, largely inhabited by the ‘Garo’ tribe and other tribal people as well. It falls exactly at 260 and 25020’ longitude and 80030’ and 89040’ E latitude. The Garo hills are one of the wettest places of the world and receives an average rainfall of 330cms annually, thus maintaining a windy weather throughout the year, and the monsoon season stays for almost 9months in a year. The Garo Hills are divided into three major ranges, namely, Tura Range, Arbella Range and the Ranggira Range.

To Reach

The head quarters of the Garo Hills district, Tura, is well connected with the nearest railhead and airport in Guwahati, Assam by regular day and night buses, privately owned and Government both. Shared and hired taxis and cars are available too. Direct buses from Siliguri, West Bengal, are also available.

To See

The Tura range is 50km long and the peaks that come under this range are Tura Peak, Nokrek Peak, Meminran Peak, Nengminjok Peak, Chitmang Peak, of which Tura peak is the highest.
The Arbella Range has most of its peaks under the East Garo Hills district and the Arbella peak is 999mtrs high.
The Ranggira Range lies on the western side of the district and the highest peak of this range is 673mtrs in height.
There are numerous local spots that can be visited in the Garo Hills, like the Nokrek Peak, Tura Peak, Imilchang Dare, Balpakram, Naphak Lake, Siju Caves, etc.

Imilchang Dare

It is an ecological spot of the West Garo hills district, with a waterfall, very near to the Tura Chokpot road. Though the stream flows through a narrow way, but to our surprise takes a sudden turn to a broader one creating a splendid waterfall and finally leading to a big pool at its bottom, making it a perfect place for fish breeding of variety of colours. This pool attracts a large number of tourists.

Naphak Lake

The Naphak lake is at a distance of 6kms from Sangsak and around 112kms from the headquarter town of Tura. The Naphak Lake is an apt place for both bird watching and those who love to go for fishing.
