Spread over an area of 88 Sq.Kms the Neora Valley National Park, in the Kalimpong Hills of Darjeeling district of West Bengal was established in April 1986. The park, a unique of its kind for its rich bio-diversity lies in the lower ridges of Himalayas and reaches a height at 10000 ft above sea level at Rechela. The Park has a border on the east with Western Bhutan and the forests of Sikkim.

Neora Valley, one of the least tracts of virgin wilderness in the country sustains a unique eco-system where tropical, sub-tropical, sub-temperate, and temperate vegetative system still harbours a wealth of flora and fauna. The forests consists of mixed species like rhododendron, bamboo, oak, ferns, sal etc. The Valley also has numerous species of orchids.

The faunal list includes some rare and endangered species such as the clouded leopard, red-panda, and musk deer. Other species are leopard, five species of civet, black bear, sloth bear, golden gat, wild boar, leopard cat, goral, serow, barking deer, sambar, Himalayan flying squirrel and thar. The park is also rich in bird life and houses the bearded vulture, Himalayan griffon, red legged falcon, pigeons, doves, great pied hornbill and a large number of migratory birds like whistling thrush etc. King cobra, common cobra krait, green pit viper, blind snake and lizards are also found. Many colourful insects such as butterflies, moths, beetles, bees, wasps, bugs cicadas are added attraction of the valley.

The main entry point to the park is Lava (7016 ft), a small picturesque hamlet adjacent to the park. There is a nature interpretation center and a Buddhist monastery here. Lava is 105 Kms from Siliguri and 30 Kms from Kalimpong. The other entry point is Samsing (3000 ft). There is no motorable road inside the park. The adventurous travelers can enter into the forest for some fabulous treks from Samsing and Lava.

Accommodation:
Neora valley can be accessed from Lava, Loleygaon and Samsing. In all the places the Forest department has Nature Wilderness Resorts that offers unforgettable stay amidst the natural environment. Tented accommodation is available in the forest resort at Suntale Khola near Samsing.

Important information:
Because of inadequate accommodation to cater the increasing rush of tourist in Lava, Loleygaon, Samsing an early confirmation is required to avail the room particularly during April-May and Oct-Nov period.
The park remains closed from June 15 to September 15. No tourist activity inside the park is allowed during this period.
