Khecheopalri is a sacred lake in West Sikkim and a popular sightseeing point for tourists visiting Pelling, Darap, Yuksom area. The lake is situated at an altitude of 5900 feet at a distance of 32 kms from Pelling town. It is considered a very sacred lake by the local Buddhists and Hindus.

It is said that the lake is shaped like the feet of Lord Buddha which can be confirmed by viewing from surrounding hills. According to local legends, the birds do not allow any leaf to float on the lake surface. The birds supposedly keep the lake clean. Although eye witness for the legend is difficult to located, the lake is surprisingly clean given that its surrounded by deep forests.

There is a swarm of fish in the lake. You can feed them but angling in the lake is strictly restricted as the fishes are also considered holy.

Getting There

A visit to Khecheopalri lake is part of most sightseeing tours from Pelling. All our guests are taken to the lake on these tours. Only West Sikkim vehicles are allowed to go to the lake. There is no restriction for international tourists to visit here.

Trekking Options

Those interested in trekking may trek from Pelling or Yuksom to Khecheopalri. It is about 7 hours trek from Pelling and about 4 hours trek from Yuksom.
