It is a small village in the East Khasi Hills District of the North-eastern state of Meghalaya. ‘Maw’ literally means “stone” and ‘Mawphlang’ thus means ‘grassy stone’ deriving its name from monoliths.
Mawphlang is just 25kms from the capital town of Meghalaya, Shillong and is easily accessible by car.
Mawphlang is an ideal place for those who want to spend some leisure time amidst the rural surrounding in the lap of nature.
Mawphlang is especially frequented for its sacred forests. The natives of the place have been preserving the sacred forests with traditional practises and they let the flowers bloom and the trees bear fruits. As soon as one enters the forest, he is sure to be enthralled by its dense green beauty and the pleasant weather here. The dense forests and grasslands are not disturbed by the local population and thus the splendour remains unspoilt. That’is the reason Mawphlang sacred forests are also known as ‘Nature’s own Museum’ with variety of trees, plants, shrubs and herbs.
