It is a small village in the East Khasi Hills District of the north-eastern state Meghalaya, and is one of the wettest places in the world. It is at an altitude of about 1400mtrs (4600ft), at 250 18’ N and 910 35’ E. Most tourists visit the area as part of day sightseeing from Shillong which is just 16 kms away.
Mawsynram is just 16kms from the famous tourist spot of Cherrapunji and is 65kms from the capital town, Shillong. Mawsynram is accessible from both the places and cars and sumos are easily available.
Alike Mawphlang, Mawsynram is also a village of megaliths, as ‘Maw’ stands for stone in the native Khasi language.
It is a cave located in the village of Mawsynram. One can get to see a pair of notable breast-shaped stalactite or stalagmite. A natural stalagmite has been formed and it relates much to the Shiva Linga.
A loaf-shaped rocky dome with a flat top is found among the hillocks, and is known as Symper Rock.
