Pedong is a small hill-station in the Kalimpong sub-division of Darjeeling district. It is a new and upcoming tourist destination not far from the Sikkim boarder at Reshi. The small town of Pedong is not just off the Kalimpong – Lava road. It offers excellent scenic beauty and is a good place to relax for a few days and try some soft adventure activities. It is a small quiet and peaceful town nestled at a comfortable elevation of 4500ft, which ensures a pleasant climate round the year.
Kalimpong is the nearest major town. From Kalimpong you first have to reach Algarah at a distance of about 16 kms (30 minutes). Take a left turn from here and Pedong is just 5 kms from Algarah.
The nearest Airport is Bagdogra about 100 kms away and New Jalpaiguri the major rail station about 94 kms. Both take a little more than 3 hours to reach.
Kalimpong is just 22 kms and half an hour drive away.
Darjeeling is via Peshok road is 70 kms and about 2 hours drive.
Siliguri via Kalimpong is 88 kms and 3 hrs drive.
Gangtok via Reshi is about 65 kms and 2.5 hours away.
Surrounded by pine forests on rolling hill slopes, Pedong commands some magnificent views of snow ranges of Mount Kanchenjunga. In the early 1800s Pedong was an important business centre on the ancient silk route connecting Tibet with India through the Jelep La Pass. The pristine landscape here is dominated by greater Himalayan ranges, long river valleys, unbroken forest tracts, colourful ethnic people in picturesque villages, old monasteries, short nature and village treks, myths and legends.
Soft Adventure - There is a adventure facility set up by local youth on the road side where for a nominal fee you can try your hand at rock climbing, mountain biking or archery.
Hike to Sillery Gaon – A new tourist destination, Sillery Gaon is just an hour uphill walk by foot. The village is set atop the hill and provides excellent view of Kanchenjunga and other hills of Sikkim and Darjeeling area.
Damsang gudi fort - a historically important site that witnessed a long ethnic war between Lepchas and Bhutias. The fort is in ruins but the site offers great view of the mountain region. The fort is about 8 kms from Pedong.
Hike to Tinchuley - A fabulous view point offering the closest snow view obtainable from the area. About couple of kms hike from town.
Located at an altitude of about 4500 feet, Pedong offers moderate weather throughout the year. You can plan your trip anytime during the year. The rainy season of July to September witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. Landslide in the area is not very uncommon during this period. Light woollen during summer months and heavy woollen during winter is a must.
