 Chopta Valley North Sikkim
Chopta valley is a tourist destination in North Sikkim. This valley can be reached from Lachen or Thangu. Lachen is the place where you are most likely to stay overnight if you are traveling to North Sikkim destinations of Gurudongmar lake. Chopta valley can be traveled as part of a day trip from Lachen. Visit to Chopta valley can be combined with a trip to Gurudongmar lake. From Lachen first you would be traveling to Thangu, a distance of just 30 km which takes close to two hours to travel. Thangu is a small village at an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although tourist accommodation is also available at Thangu, facilities are very basic and there is an increased risk of altitude related sicknesses.
 A 45 minutes drive from Thangu further north reaches to the virgin and uninhabited land of Chopta Valley. At 13500 ft with close proximity to Tibet the valley provides one of the few accessible places in Sikkim where one can actually walk over the frozen rivers. The valley is rich with Alpine vegetation. As you move further towards Gurudongmar lake, the landscape becomes more barren. Chopta valley is a riot of colours during the spring.
An adventurous trek through Chopta valley leads to Muguthang valley at an altitude of 15500ft, another unseen destination in the greater Himalayas. Eyes, as far as it can reach, find here a vast flat pasture crisscrossed by numerous snow-fed streams.
The high alpine valley of Muguthang is only inhabitable for rare high altitude ruminants and their predators. However, some nomadic tribes from Tibet occasionally settle here for food and for grazing their yaks.
