The small state of Tripura, surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh, was formerly a princely state. The capital, Agartala, has a temple of Lord Jagannath from the 19th century and the Indo-Saracenic-style Ujjayant palace, built by Maharaja Bikram Singh. Agartala is surrounded by hill stations, and 53 km from Agartala is the Neermahal palace, located in the center of a lake. Tripuran Bengalis and recent immigrants from Bangladesh now outnumber the state’s tribal population. Agartala can be reached by road from Silchar in Assam.
