Darap is a small village in West Sikkim at an altitude of 5,100 feet or 1550 meter. The village is just 7 kilometres from the tourist hub of Pelling offering peaceful environment as well as similar sightseeing options as in Pelling. The village has come up in recent years as one of the major village tourism and offbeat travel destination of Sikkim.

The Village has come into prominence for its sustainable tourism practices. Over the years the villagers have put in effort to create homestays which have own a number of awards from different agencies.

To See

The main advantage of staying at Darap is that you can enjoy close proximity to Pelling town; just 20 minutes drive away, yet avoid the tourist crowd and be amongst nature. The villagers will treat you with local food and you can walk among the villages and interact with them. The village has not yet been influenced by large movement of tourists and the natural hospitality of the People of Sikkim can still be enjoyed here.

If you have an extra day, you may hike to Rani dhunga, from where great views of the Kanchenjunga range is available. However the Darap village itself does not offer views of the Kanchenjunga range.

Many of the local sightseeing points of Pelling such as the Khecheopalri lake, Rimbi falls, Kanchenjunga falls, Singsore Bridge, Rock garden etc. are closer to Darap than Pelling.

Getting There

Darap can be reached from Pelling through the Pelling – Yuksom road. It is 125 kms from Gangtok and the distance from Siliguri by road is about 140 kms. Other destinations of Sikkim – Darjeeling Himalaya and their distance is as below.

Gangtok – 125 kms (5 hours)
Siliguri – 140 kms (6 hours)
Yuksom – 25 kms (1 hour) through a direct road which occasionally remains closed, the main road to Yuksom is about 65 kms but remain open for most of the time.
Pelling – 7 kms (20 minutes)
Ravangla – 60 kms (2.5 hours)
Hee – BermiokRinchenpong Kaluk area – 40 to 50 kms and 2 to 3 hours drive.
Darjeeling – 120 kms (5 hours) through the main Peshok road. Alternative shortcut road through Jorethan is much shorter at 80 kms but the road is very steep and occasionally remains closed.
Kalimpong – 100 kms (4 hours)
NJP Rail Station and Bagdogra Airport – 145 kms (6 hours)


Darap (5,100 feet) is at a lower elevation than Pelling (6,500 feet), the weather here is slightly warmer than Pelling. Summer temperature varies between 18 to 28 C and winter temperature varies between 5 to 15 C. Very heavy rainfall and landslide common during July – August. Snowfall does not take place in the village.
