Mongpong

An hours drive from Siliguri on NH 31 via Sevok will take you to Mongpong - your first step in Dooars. Situated on the lofty bank of great Teesta River, Mongpong is an attractive spot offering lovely view of huge Teesta basin and Mahananda Sanctuary. Mongpong is a small village with a few shops, huts and a forest check post, but if natural beauty is what you are looking for, you will be overwhelmed. The beautifully built forest rest house among the tall Sal forests overlooking the Tista River is an ideal place for spending a relaxed night in the natural surroundings. The call of beetles and cricket on a pitch dark night glittered with numerous fireflies can be a real wild feeling.

Location : On the banks of River Teesta in the Himalayan foothills.
Language : Nepali, Bengali, Hindi
People : Mostly Nepalese and some Tribals.
Nearest City : Siliguri about 35 kms away
Best Season : Throughout the year

Getting There

If you are arriving at New Jalpaiguri or Bagdogra airport, you have to travel through the Sevok Road that starts from Siliguri and passes through the Mahananda Wild Life Sanctuary to reach Sevok. Here, suddenly the dense forest gives way to open view of River Teesta on your right. The hilly terrain also starts at this point. Look accross the river and you can see Mongpong. But to travel there you have to ride uphill for a few kilometres and cross river Teesta at Bag pul (The Tiger Bridge) you again have to drive down and reach the plains and Mongpong would be on your right.

To See

Mongpong is a place for pure relaxation. The river bed is full with picnickers during the winter month picnic season. You can go for a walk inside the forest across the road. Mongpong is an ideal spot for visitors interested in Birding. Apart from the resident birds, a large number of migratory birds come down in the nearby Gajaldoba area and visit Mongpong regularly.

Sighting of elephant is also very common as the place is on the traditional Bhutan – Bengal – Nepal Migratory route of the pachyderm. Occasional fishermen on boat can be seen and they might as well be cajoled to take you on a ride in the river. You can also drive further inside Dooars, Bagrakot is about 17 kms away, Malbazar is about 30 kms and Gorumara forests about 50 kms. You can also drive up the hills with Kalimpong close to 2 hours drive away. Latpanchar is about an hours drive at a distance of about 30 kms.
