Phuentsholing - (300m/985ft)

Situated in the east-central part of Bhutan and about 250 kilometers from Thimphu, this small and beautiful town is the place where the Buddhism first took hold in Bhutan. A number of monasteries naturally flock the landscape here. Most of the apple grooves are situated also situated in Bumthang adding to the attraction of the town.

This is the gateway to Southern Bhutan from Indian state of West Bengal. The place provides a fascinating mixture of cultures of the Indian and the Bhutanese people. The border is open for the people of the two countries. In the recent years, due to problems of insurgency in some parts, limited restrictions have been imposed on movement. Even now, the people on both side of the border depend on one another for their daily livelihood.
