Wildlife sanctuaries have always attracted nature lovers from different parts of the world. Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is a portal to the most celibate tourist destinations of India- Northeast.  It is situated in the flood plains of Brahmaputra River and surrounded by tea-gardens and Amchang Wildlife sanctuary. 

Pobitora was announced a reserve forest in 1971 and wildlife sanctuary in 1987.The sanctuary is encircled by the Brahmaputra River and Kalang River and is particularly camouflaged by tall grass that is optimal for rhinos.

Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is a wildlife reserve located in the district of Morigaon in the state of Assam. Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is located 48 km east of Guwahati. The road route passes by Brahmaputra River and a cramped fraction of Mayong village where tourists can sneak-peek into the hill capped village and its culture before heading to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has a small sanctuary with respect to other rhino sanctuaries of Assam yet the concentration of rhino is as high as 80 for an area of 15 sq kilometers. Being a marshy land Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is an impeccable dwelling best suited for rhinos and is enclosed by farmland villages. The sightings of rhino is effectually persuaded and the visitors can commonly see 5-10 rhinos when riding to the forest on an elephant ,as elephants can get closer to rhinos than jeeps. Jeep ride are also available inside the sanctuary.

Pobitora also has other animals like jackal, wild boar and buffalo. It is also known for its affluent birdlife to a large number of bird species.

Although Pobitora can be visited throughout the year, the best time to plan a trip to Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is from November to February.

Tourist Activities

• At the dawn and the dusk jeep and elephant rides are the main event in Pobitora wildlife sanctuary.
• Visitors on a day trip can enjoy the birdlife and wildlife and can also take a walk around the sanctuary which serves as a pleasant place for a walk.
• A small spot for picnic and playground for children is located which is close to Hadluk Hanging Bridge. In some seasons the local visitor’s combines picnic with excellent elephant rides while enjoying the dazzling and spectacular landscape of Pobitora.
• River cruise on Brahmaputra river, Silver streak night club, NEDFI Haat, Lounge bar, Surya Shopping complex and Bamboo market are some other tourist attractions.
• Saraighat Bridge,Haya griba Madhaba temple,Assam state museum,Ugro Tara temple,Hajo(Town) and Chandubi lake are the must visit spots in and around Pobitora Wildlife sanctuary.


Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is 170 kilometers from Porbitora Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a world heritage site affirmed by UNESCO and the park acclaims the two-thirds of the world’s enormous one-horned rhino. Kaziranga is also an alluring wildlife sanctuary along with Pobitora wildlife sanctuary.


Sivakunda is a dazzling and opulent waterfall located in Amsoi hills is also one of the important tourist attractions.


Sitajakhala is an archaic and ancient temple to visit to on the banks of River Kalang. The temple structure is filleted with the statues of Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman.


Mayong is located 10 kilometers from Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is contemplated the capital of witchcraft and black magic, the historical importance is enough to attract tourists here.
