Perched atop a hill at an elevation of 4500ft near Bhutan boarder Rongo or Rongu served as a Headquarter of Cinchona Plantation under Kalimpong sub-division. A small isolated village having a local bazaar, a post office and few houses Rongo used to be an important place for growing medicinal plants. Rongo offers beautiful views of surrounding hills, forests and Jaldhaka river valley.

Rongo can be reached from Siliguri through Dooars via Chalsa - Khunia More - Gairibas towards Bindu. From Gairibas a rough motorable road branches off towards left to Rongo, which is 7 kms.

Rongu does not feature as one of the most famous tourist destinations of North Bengal. But the natural beauty of this hill beauty and the hospitality of the local people draws many a travel enthusiasts to this less known hill station.

The population of Rongu is about 500 people. Most people are Buddhist and speak Nepali. The population is mostly dependent on cinchona plantation for livelihood.

Getting There

You have to follow the main Dooars national Highway that passes through Sevok, Odlabari, Malbazar, Chalsa to reach Khunia crossing inside Chapramari National Park. From here take a left turn and soon you will be crossing Naksal khola river. As you cross the river you will start climbing the hills. Soon you will reach Mourey. There is substantial cinchona and rubber plantation in the area around. From Gairibans, the swirling road to the right goes to Jhalong and Bindu and the road on the left goes to Rongu at an altitude of 3700 feet.

Sightseeing

Close to the main market is the local Buddhist monastery. The last kilometre has to be reached by foot through stone stairs. The monastery is made of wood and is situated in a peaceful surrounding. There is a watchtower near the monastery from where you can see the West Biru area of Bhutan.
