Sonada is one of the small towns which most tourists zoom past on their way to Darjeeling through NH 55. The town midway between Darjeeling (18 kms) and Kurseong (17 kms). The small town has a rail station of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

Few people stop over and realise the beauty of Sonada as a tourist destination. Thankfully the trend is changing, albeit slowly, as more and more people become interested to visit destinations outside the major town and enjoy a more peaceful surrounding. As experiencing nature takes precedence over sightseeing tours, destinations such as Sonada is sure to come out more prominently in the coming days.

The small town is 17 kms away from the Darjeeling, the queen of hills. Most of the shops and houses are located close to the highway and the Sonada rail station of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, making the area quite crowded. Just a 100 metre walk away from the town will put you in the arms of pristine nature.

Tea Garden

The area is famous for some of the best tea gardens in the world. Immediate downhill from Sonada is the Rumbook tea garden. Within a short distance are other tea gardens including the Balasun Tea Estate, Kalej Valley Tea Estate, Margaret’s Hope Tea Garden and others.

Things to See

Across the police station, behind the rail yard, an uphill road will soon take you to Old cart road. This is the original road to Darjeeling build by the British more than a century back. Today instead of vehicles blowing horns, chirping birds flying amidst coniferous “Dupi” tree will welcome you here. Sonada forest is to your left and the upcoming destination of Chatakpur is about 3 kms ahead.

The famous sunrise point of Tiger hill can also be reached from here on foot. If you prefer to go by vehicle, Tiger Hill and Senchal lake is about 30 minutes drive. Many a famous tea gardens producing some of the best Darjeeling Tea are within an hour’s walk. People here are friendly and welcoming to tourists. For a weary traveller looking for a rejuvenation, a few days in Sonada is just the remedy you need.

Getting There

Siliguri, the transit hub, as well as the place where the most important rail station and airport is located, is about 55 kms away (2 hours). Bagdogra in the outskirts of Siliguri is the nearest Airport and NJP the nearest major rail station.
