Orchid Research and Development Centre - Tipi

Tippi is the home of Asia’s third largest orchidarium named Tippi Orchid Research Centre. It is spread over an area of 112.8 acres and boasts of 50,600 orchids out of many exotic and endangered species. Some of the prominent orchid species found in the orchidarium are Lost Indian Lady’s Slipper, Lost Dancing Girls, Rhunchostylis and Vanda. The orchidarium was started in 1972 with the purpose of conservation and research on various indigenous species of orchids. The whole complex is divided into orchid glasshouse, orchidaria, tissue culture labrotary, herbarium, museum and hardening unit. Museum displays photographs, charts and specimens while herbarium specializes in the collection of orchid species in and around Arunachal Pradesh. Orchidaria, under the natural shade of the trees, exhibits rehabilitated orchid species. The most picturesque and fascinating part of the Orchid centre is the glasshouse which is decorated and equipped in such a manner as to please every visitor.

Those willing to see more of orchids should definitely visit the Sessa Orchid Sanctuary at Tippi. The orchid sanctuary has a considerably larger contribution in making Arunachal Pradesh the ‘Orchid Paradise’ of India. The 100 square kilometers of the preserved Sanctuary is a treat for travelers as well as researchers who get to see and learn about an indefinitely great number of orchid species. The favorable climatic condition along with a suitable relief feature makes it ideal for orchid cultivation.

The Sessa Orchid Sanctuary is located close to Bhalukpong in Western Arunachal Pradesh. There is a small stream passing through the sanctuary known as Tippi nala. The stream meets river Kameng close to the highway where the orchid museum is located.

This area is also home to a number of wild animals and is surely the best place for some bird-watching. In fact, apart from the common two-winged bird the tourists can have the pleasure of watching migratory birds. Just a 20 kilometers drive from Tippi is worth taking when it comes to enjoying this floral heaven.
